Before my love for a chainsaw started I was working as a journeyman carpenter underground in Seattle mostly building controlled sewer overflow tanks, needless to say I know a little about getting dirty and working hard. 5 years ago I left that and have been waking up everyday sense with a smile on my face happy about what I call work. Many people are worried about the condition of there home or a specific area and aren’t exactly sure what it will take to fix it. Media Blasting
We want to bring your house back to the way it shined years ago. After a log house has been built in the Pacific Northwest it only takes years for the weather to start to show damage. In most cases media blasting is needed to bring the logs back and remove the damaged wood. Using crushed walnut and a tow behind compressor we will remover the layer of dead wood. laying tarps on the perimeter and masking the interior if walnut intrudes. Our promise is to make this process as clean and comfortable as possible.
Rotten Log Repair
Rotten or water damaged logs need to be removed from the home. In most cases media blasting is recommended in order to uncover all the rot on a house. In cases where the rot is visible and media blasting is not done prior the stain may appear to be a different colour after the rot repair is complete. The log work on every home is a little different and I personally will do my best to match the craftsmanship of your home. Full log repair is not always needed on homes with visible rot and half log repair is an option most of the time. After rot has been successfully removed from he home borat is applied to the remaining logs. Rot repair is secured using timber locks appropriately sized and is sanded, stained, and chink for your protection. All replacement logs are either Western Red Cedar or Douglas fir and have been seasoned and borated prior to install.
Grinding and Sanding
The sanding process is usually the longest part of the restoration process. This typically comes after media blasting. In some cases media blasting is not the best option and grinders and sanders do the trick just fine, every home and every log is different. Grinders are used on all the log ends as well as all the copings where there is open grain. Sanding the house is a big step as to how the logs will take the stain so this process usually takes the majority of the time.
Washing and Cleaning
A major factor into how the stain will look after we leave comes in the hours cleaning up. The entire project is messy and the best way to keep it clean is to clean up as you go. putting tarps under everything messy were doing and spending time at the end of everyday cleaning the mess you made. Washing comes after all the power tools have been put away and debris has been cleaned. Using Perma Chink systems Log wash into a pressure washer along with car brushes we clean your house. It’s always a good idea to wash your house and apply clear coat at least once a year.
Staining
The big day is seeing the colour on the logs for for first time. Using the best product on the market Perma Chink Systems Ultra 7 gives our customers the best looking logs in the business. Before staining we spend time masking anything this is not going to be stained, as well as laying tarps on the ground so there is never the worry of overspray. Applied using an airless sprayer followed by back brushing, the stain is applied. One coat of colour and one coat clear. An addition coat of prelude may be necessary on areas that are extremely damaged prior to colour. Spending time making sure there’s no spot untouched and there’s no drips is what sets our staining apart. After staining log end sealer is applied to all the log ends providing additional protection to the end grain.
Decks, Stairs, handrails
Many homes have something on the deck they need repaired because this is the part of your house that is most exposed. This is big part in the craftsmanship of my work and when I can’t build it I go down to my friend at Mt Log and Timber and he helps me out. Everything from the standard lumber to logs we can build anything you need.
